Increasing consumption of antibiotics leads to resistance. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), antibiotic resistance is one of the top ten global public health threats facing the world. It is a problem because it turns once-treatable infections into life-threatening conditions, undermining decades of medical progress.

E. coli and MRSA are among the most common fast-growing bacteria in humans that cause acute infections. Both are included in Denmark's monitoring of antibiotic resistance, e.g.: through DANMAP, the Danish Integrated Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring and Research Programme.
