Documentation of statistics: Home to work commuting

Contact info, Labour Market , Pernille Stender , +45 24 92 12 33 , PSD@dst.dk , Get documentation of statistics as pdf, Commuting 2016 , Previous versions, The purpose of the RAS statistic is to provide a description of the Danish population's commuting and distance between place of residence and work place. The commuting statistic has been published since 1984. The distance between residence and work place was first published in 2006. The statistic is in the current form comparable from 2008 and forward. , Statistical presentation, The statistic is an annually and individual based count of the employed persons commuting between residence and work place in the last working day in November. Including a calculation of the distance between the commuters residence and work place i kilometers (km). The commuting statistic is published in the Statbank where the statistic besides from residence, work place and commuting distance also is divided on sex, industry (DB07) and socioeconomic status. Data is also available trough the Division of Research Services and DST Consulting., Read more about statistical presentation, Statistical processing, The commuting statistic is compiled on the register-based labour force statistic (RAS), which is based on the Labour Market Account (LMA) - a longitudinal register. A comprehensive data validation is done in the production of AMR. RAS is done by taking a status (on the populations primary attachment to the labour market) on the last working day in November based on LMA. Based on the information about the address of residence and workplace for employed persons the commuting distance is calculated. , Read more about statistical processing, Relevance, The statistic is relevant for users interested in mobility on the labour market and the data foundation makes it possible to connect detailed information for analysis. , Read more about relevance, Accuracy and reliability, The commuting statistic is compiled from RAS which is used to present the primary connection to the labour market for people resident in Denmark. RAS contains a series of data sources that are integrated, debugged and harmonized. RAS does therefore not contain the same uncertainties as statistics based on samplings. , The definition of the primary job for employed persons is source to uncertainty in the commuting statistic, since the workplace address for the primary job and the address of residence is the foundation for the calculation of the commuting distance. It is also important to be aware that the calculated commuting distance reflects an ideal situation where every person is believed to travel from residence to workplace by the shortest route and by car. , Read more about accuracy and reliability, Timeliness and punctuality, The commuting statistic is published approximately 17 months after the reference point in time. The date of publication, which is normally complied without delay, is defined more than a year ahead. , Read more about timeliness and punctuality, Comparability, The statistic is published since 1984, and is in the current shape comparable from 2008 and forward. The statistic shows commuting within and across municipalities in Denmark, and the data foundation is based on administrative registers with national features. It is therefore difficult to compare the statistic internationally. , New and better data foundations and changes in the labour market have caused a number of data breaks over time, which have influence on the possibility of comparing data over time. , Read more about comparability, Accessibility and clarity, The statistic is published annually in a Danish press release, at the same time as the tables are updated in the StatBank. R-training in Georgia

In Georgia there is definitely something to celebrate! Despite difficulties coming from the new COVID19-normal, 22 participants have just completed their first training in the IT software ‘R’ at the Georgian National Statistical Office (GeoStat) as part of the EU Twinning project. A success assigned to coordination and cooperation across different sectors and domains with multiple partners and interest groups., 18 May 2021 8:00 ,  , An IT review and a discussion with Expertise France... , EU Twinning projects run with a specific set of objectives and clearly defined activities. But in GeoStat something more is bustling as an IT review combined with an ongoing coordination across projects has led to supplementary and essential goals to be pursued., Georgia - table with gear ready for Covid19 and online meeting. , Photo: Steen B. Pedersen,  , IT-resources are scarce in GeoStat why an IT-sector review led by the , UN Economic Commission on Europe (, UNECE), which the Twinning project was invited to take part in, encouraged them to develop an IT-training strategy for both IT and statistical staff. Training of IT staff will raise the skills and competence level of staff and in the long run hopefully attract new IT staff to GeoStat. Training of statistical staff will on the other hand, loosen the pressure on IT-resources. , The IT-sector review also suggested that GeoStat considers alternatives to Excel and MS-Access for statistical production processes. And meanwhile, Twinning experts on different subject areas were working with colleagues from GeoStat on implementing new statistical products and procedures – and choosing IT software was an essential part of that work. Selecting a well-known solution would of course be the easiest on the short run, but this did not happen!  , The Resident Twinning Advisor and the Project leader from Expertise France implementing the EU funded project “Statistics for the Eastern Partnership” (STEP) had long been discussing opportunities for possible areas of cooperation and synergies between the two projects with ‘R’ being a top priority for cooperation. Now to build from the bricks of the IT-sector review and the parallel discussions around cooperation efforts, ‘R’ was instead added to both work plans and course materials with efforts to take the first steps towards implementing an open source software more systematically as an integrated part of the statistical production process.  , Conducting training in times of COVID19, Like so much else, COVID19 also challenges statistical capacity building across borders why the first R-mission in the frame of the Twinning project was conducted online. On a positive note, this allowed for more employees to participate compared to the original plan. 6 sessions, of three hours each, in a combination of plenary introductions and practical training in “breakout rooms” - covered subjects such as data manipulation, data visualisation and more advanced loops and function procedures. , The next training mission will be conducted during the summer 2021. Meanwhile GeoStat employees have the opportunity to test/put their newly adapted skills into practice.,  , # Facts , about the EU Twinning project:, Name: , Strengthening the capacity of the Georgian Statistical system, Partner: ,  , National Statistics Office of Georgia  & Statistics Denmark, Duration: , April 2019 – July 2021,

The results of the study are used, among other things, for the Danish Energy Agency's annual energy statistics and the Ministry of the Environment's assessment of emissions from wood stoves in Denmark. The study is based on a survey sent to a sample of households in Denmark. The study is conducted every two years, and reports dating back to 2009 can be found on the Danish Energy Agency's website. Statistics Denmark carried out the current study in collaboration with the Danish Energy Agency., Statistical presentation, The statistics calculate the number of homes and holiday homes that are entirely or partially heated by wood stoves, etc., and the proportion these homes represent of the total housing stock. Additionally, the total consumption of firewood, etc., corresponding to the year 2023 is calculated. The results are presented as totals and broken down by geography, primary heat sources, wood stove types, and housing types., Read more about statistical presentation, Statistical processing, The firewood survey is a sample-based survey. The interviews were collected via a web-based questionnaire, with approximately 20,000 responses most recently collected. The selected respondents are scaled to a national level using background information from population and housing statistics registers. The results are adjusted for non-responses, and data is error-checked at both micro and macro levels. During data processing, a limited number of responses are corrected due to inconsistencies or obviously incorrect answers. Household use of firewood, wood briquettes, and wood pellets is converted from physical quantities to total energy consumption based on standard values for energy content., Read more about statistical processing, Relevance, The survey was developed with support from a working group with representatives from the Danish Energy Agency and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, who use the results for calculating energy consumption and particle emissions from wood-burning stoves. Additionally, the statistics are of interest to others concerned with energy and the environment. As the survey is new under Statistics Denmark, there is no experience yet with user satisfaction., Read more about relevance, Accuracy and reliability, There will always be errors associated with sample-based and questionnaire-based statistics. The survey framework was reviewed and quality assured before distribution, but it is rare to avoid identifying sources of error afterward. The results of the statistics are compared with previous, relevant studies on wood consumption, etc., and deviations are to be expected due to normal sampling uncertainty, minor differences in data processing, and real changes in the prevalence and consumption patterns regarding heating in private homes and holiday homes., Read more about accuracy and reliability, Timeliness and punctuality, The survey is conducted every two years, and the publication time is two months from late May to late August.
