Definition
The indicator, according to the original UN definition, consists of five sub-indicators. Here, two of the five sub-indicators are presented:
-
Annual percentage change in forest area, and
-
Growing stock per hectare of forest area.
Regarding sub-indicator 3 (forest area within protected areas) and sub-indicator 4 (forest area under long-term management plans), data are currently not available.
Regarding sub-indicator 5 (forest area under certification schemes), data sources exist, but further assessment is needed to determine whether they can be used.
The data come from the official forest statistics, which up to 2024 are compiled by the University of Copenhagen (Forest & Landscape). The Danish Agency for Green Transition and Aquatic Environment has been responsible for the overall monitoring of forests since 2024. This task was previously carried out by the University of Copenhagen. The 2024 forest statistics are expected to be published by the end of 2026.
