6.1.1: Safely drinking water services
Proportion of population using safely managed drinking water services
Definition
Denmark does not compile continuous and official statistics in accordance with the methodology of the indicator. In Denmark, all potable drinking water is utilized from the groundwater. According to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency all households in Denmark have access to portable safe drinking water in- or outside their property, either delivered from a common water supply or from their own water drilling.
The water suppliers’ duty of supply is stated in the Water Supply Act. If private water drillings cannot be used, existing water suppliers may be subject to a duty of supply for the households concerned. According to the Water Supply Act, groundwater must not be recovered without permission. The quality of the drinking water is regulated by the The Safe Drinking Water Order, in which the EU Drinking Water Directive is implemented.
To ensure clean potable drinking water etc., the quality of the groundwater is monitored including the water's content of nitrate and pesticides. In addition to that, there are a large number of preventative efforts to protect the groundwater. Drinking water is monitored on an ongoing basis and if the set of quality requirements is not in compliance with the rules, the responsible public authority, which are the municipalities, ensures that the quality will be in compliance with the rules and that the appropriate safety actions are taken.
