EU’s Combined Nomenclature
When reporting to Intrastat, you will be asked to report at the commodity code level. The commodity codes for Intrastat are 8 digits which are subdivided into the numerical system which is called the Combined Nomenclature (CN).
The code system is structured so that the first 6 digits equal HS, the Harmonized System, which is the international product classification system. Adding 2 digits gives you the Combined Nomenclature.
The nomenclature has a hierarchical structure which starts with the general commodity group at the top, descending to the more specific items.
Example of the hierarchical structure:
In the sections below, you will find the most important search engines where you can search using key words. The EU search engine is preferable, as it has a well-developed search function. In addition, we provide Excel sheets where all product codes are described - either with the official texts or explanatory texts.
In the section 'CN Sections and Chapters', we have listed the main sections and chapters that can help you in finding the first two digits of the CN Commodity Code.
If you can't find the Commodity Code you need, please contact the SKAT Tariff Department at (+45) 72 22 12 12.
There are various search engines available to help you find Commodity Codes. EU offers an advanced solution, which is available in English and French: Go to EU's Combined Nomenclature Search Engine
It is also possible to search for Commodity Codes within IDEP.web, which is the program used for reporting Intrastat to Statistics Denmark. You must be logged in to IDEP.web before you can use the search engine.
In addition, Statistics Denmark publishes Excel sheets with commodity codes each year - one with the official texts and one with the explanatory texts. You will find these lists in the section below.

It may be a difficult task to identify the product codes which you need to report for. Nevertheless, they are a significant part of the External Trade Statistics, which are not only used by public institutions, such as the Ministry of Finance, the National Bank, the EU and others, but also by Danish companies in connection with market analysis.
The information about which products Danish companies are buying from and selling to other EU countries is not only as a tool for market analysis, but also in the field of market research. They are also a tool for guiding political decision makers in terms of which trade-promoting actions are necessary.
